Yogi Adityanath was born on June 5, 1972, in Panchur village, Yamkeshwar Tehsil, in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand (then Uttar Pradesh; see: Division of Uttar Pradesh), in a Garhwali Rajput family. His father’s name is Anand Singh Bisht, who was a forest ranger, and his mother’s name is Savitri Devi.

He started studying in 1977 at the local school in Gaja, Tehri, and passed the 10th grade from there in 1987. In 1989, he passed the intermediate exam from Shri Bharat Mandir Inter College in Rishikesh. While pursuing graduation in 1990, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. While staying in Kotdwar, their belongings were stolen from their room, including their Sanatan certificate. Because of this, their attempt to pursue a postgraduate science degree in Gorakhpur failed. After that, they enrolled again in postgraduate science in Rishikesh, but due to the impact of the Ram Temple movement and problems related to admission, their focus got diverted elsewhere. In 1993, while studying for an MSc in Mathematics, they came to Gorakhpur to research Guru Gorakhnath and took shelter under their uncle Mahant Avaidyanath in Gorakhpur and received initiation. In 1994, they became a full sanyasi, after which their name changed from Ajay Singh Bisht to Yogi Adityanath.
After the death of Gorakhnath Temple’s former head priest Avadhyayanath on September 12, 2014, he was made the head priest here. Two days later, according to the traditional Nath sect rituals, he was appointed as the chief of the temple.
Political life
Yogi Adityanath first contested the elections from Gorakhpur as a BJP candidate in 1998 and won. At that time, he was only 26 years old. He was the youngest MP of the 12th Lok Sabha (1998-99). In 1999, he was again elected as an MP from Gorakhpur.
In April 2002, he formed the Hindu Yuva Vahini. In 2004, he won the Lok Sabha elections for the third time. In 2009, he reached the Lok Sabha by winning with more than 2 lakh votes. In 2014, for the fifth time, he was elected as an MP again by winning with more than 2 lakh votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP got the majority, after which by-elections were held for 12 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Yogi Adityanath campaigned a lot during these, but the results were disappointing. In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP national president had Yogi Adityanath campaign across the state. He was also provided with a helicopter.
On March 19, 2017, in a meeting of the BJP legislative party in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath was chosen as the leader of the legislative party and handed over the post of Chief Minister.

Connection with the Bharatiya Janata Party
Adityanath has had a relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party for over a decade. He has considerable influence in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Before him, his predecessor and former head priest of the Gorakhnath Math, Mahant Avaidyanath, had also won the 1991 and 1996 Lok Sabha elections from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Performance in the Lok Sabha elections
Yogi Adityanath first contested the elections in 1998 from Gorakhpur as a BJP candidate and won by a very small margin. But after that, his winning margin increased in every election, and he was elected as an MP in 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014. He also founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini in April 2002.
Dispute
On September 7, 2008, Yogi Adityanath survived a deadly violent attack in Azamgarh. He barely escaped with his life in this attack. The attack was so large that the attackers surrounded more than a hundred vehicles and beat people brutally. Adityanath was arrested during the Gorakhpur riots when a Hindu youth was killed in firing during the Muslim festival of Muharram. The district magistrate reported that he was badly injured.
At that time, the officials stopped Yogi from going to that place, but Adityanath insisted on going there. He then demanded the removal of the curfew imposed in the city. The next day, he announced a memorial gathering in the middle of the city, but the district magistrate refused to grant permission for it.
Adityanath didn’t worry about it either and got arrested along with thousands of supporters. He was sent to jail under sections 151A, 146, 147, 279, and 506 of the CRPC. The action against him led to some coaches of the Mumbai-Gorakhpur Godan Express being set on fire, for which his organization, Hindu Yuva Vahini, was blamed.
These riots also spread to six districts and three divisions in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The day after their arrest, District Magistrate Hari Om and Police Chief Raja Srivastava were transferred. Allegedly, it was due to pressure from Adityanath that Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Uttar Pradesh government had to take this action.
Yogi was quite in the news for opposing religious conversion and advocating for homecoming. In 2005, Yogi Adityanath allegedly purified about 1,800 Christians and brought them into Hinduism. This purification of Christians was carried out in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh.
