The central government has introduced several new rules for the convenience of candidates. Now, students are likely to get exam centers near their homes, get information about the exam city in advance, have more time for each question, and strict security arrangements will be in place to ensure transparency in the exam.
Announcement of changes before the exam
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has made these changes before the NEET-PG 2026 exam scheduled for August 30. The aim is to make the exam more fair, secure, and transparent, while also reducing stress for the candidates. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the preparations for NEET-PG 2026 and instructed officials to ensure that the exam is conducted smoothly in a safe and technology-based manner.

They got updates on the preparations from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), the technical team, and other agencies, and emphasized making the exam easier and fairer for the candidates. It is worth noting that this year, a total of 2,73,183 candidates have registered for NEET-PG 2026, showing an increase of more than 12.5 percent compared to last year.
The exam center will be found near the house
The biggest change has been made in the process of choosing the exam center. Earlier, candidates were allotted centers on a first-come, first-served basis. But that won’t happen anymore. Under the new system, candidates will have to select three preferred states for their exam center. It will be mandatory for candidates to give their own state the first preference. The ministry further said that this will help ensure that candidates are allocated centers close to their place of residence.
Earlier, candidates who registered later often found that nearby centers were fully booked, and they had to go to distant states to take the exam. Candidates will also get information about the exam city allocated to them around three weeks before the exam on August 30, giving them enough time to arrange travel and accommodation.
Until now, candidates often got the information about the city and exam center just a few days before the exam, which led to organizational challenges and extra expenses. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has decided to revise the exam pattern so that candidates answer 180 multiple-choice questions in 210 minutes.
Earlier, the exam had 200 questions, with a maximum score of 800 marks. However, while the total duration remains the same, in the revised format, candidates are given more time to answer each question.

In recent years, due to certain circumstances, the NEET-PG exam was conducted in two shifts, but now the NEET-PG 2026 exam will be held in a single shift. According to the ministry, conducting the exam in a single shift will ensure that all candidates face questions of the same difficulty level, and students can be assessed in a more fair and transparent way.
Security arrangements are strict
The central government has strengthened security measures to make the NEET-PG 2026 exam safer and more transparent. From the application stage to the exam day, there will be Aadhaar-based verification. If identification through fingerprints fails, the iris biometric system will be used. To secure the question papers, multiple levels of encryption technology, safe offline preparation, and controlled digital decryption before the exam have been arranged. Additionally, NBEMS has started a separate email system for complaints regarding cheating, fake candidates, and wrongful activities.
The NEET-PG 2026 exam will be held in a single shift across around 340 cities and over 1,300 exam centers. More than 60,000 staff members will be deployed for the exam. Security arrangements will include prior inspection of exam centers, CCTV monitoring, biometric verification, frisking of candidates, signal jammers, secure computer allocation, and live monitoring.
