The country’s first hydrogen fuel cell train is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective for passengers. Its fare is even lower than a platform ticket and the Delhi Metro. The country’s first hydrogen train will run on the tracks starting today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to flag off the country’s first hydrogen train from Jind station in Haryana. This train is not only fast but also completely eco-friendly and pollution-free. The hydrogen train is different from a regular diesel or electric train. It uses hydrogen gas.
Electricity is generated from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen present in the air, which powers the train. It only emits water vapor. There’s no smoke, no carbon dioxide, or pollution. So, this is a completely zero-emission train.
Features of India’s first hydrogen train
Route: It will run between Jind and Sohnaipat (89 km) in Haryana. It will make two round trips daily, covering a total distance of 356 km. The hydrogen train will stop at Jind City, Gohana, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Khera, Bhambhewa, Isapur Khedi, Butana, Khandrai, Rabra, Lath, Mohana, and Sohnaipat stations.
Speed: The operational speed of the hydrogen train is 75 km/h. During trials, it reached up to 120 km/h. The hydrogen train will cover 90 km in one hour, while the old diesel train takes 2 hours to cover the same distance.
Coach: The 10-coach hydrogen train has 2 driving power cars (DPC) and 8 passenger coaches. The total power is 2400 kilowatts.
Passenger capacity: The hydrogen train has a total of 682 seats and can carry around 2,600 passengers.
Range: Can run about 250 km on a single hydrogen fill. Will use around 300 kg of hydrogen daily.
Fare: Extremely cheap, just 5 to 25 rupees. Even less than the platform ticket (which usually costs 10-20 rupees) and the metro.
Special attention has been given to safety due to the use of hydrogen gas in the train. It has been equipped with a multi-layer safety system. For safety, hydrogen leak detectors, fire detectors, and monitoring systems have been installed.
How does a hydrogen train work?
There are power cars at both ends of the hydrogen train. Each power car has a hydrogen cylinder, fuel cell, and battery. Electricity is generated from hydrogen, which powers the motor. Extra electricity is stored in the battery, which helps during high speeds or climbing. The hydrogen train is 60% quieter than a diesel train.
Benefits of hydrogen trains
- No pollution: Only water vapor comes out. The air will stay cleaner compared to diesel trains.
- Lower fuel imports: India will have to depend less on oil and diesel.
- Best for non-electrified routes: where it’s difficult to install overhead wires, hydrogen trains will come in handy.
The cost of this pilot project (train + infrastructure) is around 1.12 billion rupees. A railway hydrogen refueling plant has been set up in Jind. It has the complete setup for storing, compressing, and filling hydrogen. The plant is also equipped with leak detectors, flame detectors, auto shutdown, water spray, and fire alarms. The railway plans to run 35 hydrogen trains under the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative.
