At least five people died when a passenger ferry caught fire near Indonesia’s Madura Island on Sunday (August 2), while 41 people are still missing. A large-scale search and rescue operation has been launched following the accident. According to Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, there were a total of 271 people on board the ferry, including passengers and crew members. By Sunday afternoon, at least 225 people had been safely rescued, while the search for the missing continued.
This ferry was going from Surabaya in East Java province to Makassar in South Sulawesi. During this time, a fire broke out on the ferry near Madura Island, which is located off the northeast coast of Java.
Several ships have been deployed for the rescue operation. Officials are searching for the missing people in the surrounding sea area. The cause of the fire on the ferry has not been immediately determined.

About a year before this, there was also a deadly ferry fire in Indonesia. In July 2025, a fire on a passenger ship near North Sulawesi province killed at least three people, while about 150 people were rescued.
The ship named KM Barcelona 5 was carrying about 280 people. Last year, on July 19, a fire broke out on the ship while it was traveling at sea near the provincial capital, Manado.
Besides this incident in 2025, there have been several cases of fires on ferries and maritime accidents in Indonesia. In May 2021, shortly after departing from Ternate, the KM Karya Indah ferry caught fire in the Molucca Sea. After the fire broke out, passengers and crew members had to jump into the sea. With the help of authorities and local fishing boats, all 181 passengers and 14 crew members were safely rescued. Among the passengers were 22 children. No one died in this accident.
