Customers flock to these cars, waiting period increased for months :- Whether or not E20 petrol has impacted your vehicle’s mileage and maintenance costs, the discourse surrounding this fuel has shifted market trends. Growing concerns regarding ethanol-blended fuel have now spurred a surge in demand for vehicles running on other types of fuel.
While it may be difficult to gauge exactly how much of an impact ethanol-blended E20 petrol has had on your vehicle, this fuel has certainly shifted market dynamics. Concerns surrounding E20 have significantly influenced car-buying habits and consumer preferences, leading to a sudden surge in demand for vehicles with alternative fuel options and a substantial increase in their waiting periods.
Recently, many people have complained that using E20 petrol has led to a drop in their vehicle’s mileage and increased maintenance costs. These reports regarding E20 fuel are influencing car-buying decisions; many consumers are now opting for CNG and electric vehicles (EVS) instead of petrol ones. The sudden surge in demand for these vehicles is also impacting their supply.
The situation is such that the demand for certain popular EV and CNG models has surged to the point where companies are unable to match supply with customer demand. Waiting periods for some vehicles have reached up to six months.
How much waiting on which vehicles
Currently, the Mahindra XEV 9S is generating the most buzz, with customers potentially facing a waiting period of around six months. Meanwhile, certain variants of the Tata Punch EV and Tata Tiago EV have waiting periods ranging from 18 to 24 weeks. In the electric scooter segment, the TVS iQube continues to see the highest demand, with some variants requiring a wait of approximately four to five months.
On the other hand, the average waiting period for the Maruti Brezza is around two months. Notably, the turbo-petrol and CNG variants account for approximately 70% of the Brezza’s total bookings. This clearly indicates that customers are rapidly shifting towards alternative powertrain options rather than relying solely on petrol models. While vehicle waiting periods typically increase during the festive season, customers are having to wait for their preferred vehicles even before the festivities have begun.
According to a channel inspection conducted by Yes Securities in August, inquiries and bookings for EV and CNG vehicles have surged by over 30 percent. This growth rate is more than double that of traditional ICE (petrol and diesel) vehicles. The report attributes this shift to the launch of new models alongside growing negative sentiment regarding E20 fuel. While the maximum waiting period was around one month about five months ago, it has now extended to three to four months.
Longest waiting period for the cheaper EV variants
An interesting trend observed in the EV market is that customers are facing longer waiting periods for lower-priced variants. There is a waiting period of 18 to 24 weeks for the Tata Punch EV Smart 30 and certain variants of the Tiago EV. Meanwhile, delivery of the Tata Sierra EV’s ‘Pure 65’ variant may require a wait of approximately 12 to 15 weeks. In contrast, the waiting period for some of the more expensive Sierra EV variants is around four to six weeks.
This simply means that if a customer is willing to spend more, they can get the same car model much sooner. The increased demand for lower-priced variants has put supply-side pressure on companies.
This surge in demand for EV and CNG vehicles is being witnessed just as the country’s peak festive shopping season is about to begin. Passenger vehicle sales in Kerala rose by over 20 percent year-on-year during Onam. Major festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dhanteras, and Diwali are coming up next; people typically purchase vehicles in large numbers during these festivals.
