The Indian marine engineer Heramb Karmarkar, who went missing since Sunday during an attack on the GFS Galaxy container ship near the Oman coast, has died. This was confirmed by his father-in-law, Vivek Tandon. He said that the company operating the ship informed the family about Heramb’s death.
30-year-old Heramb Karmarkar was posted as a marine engineer on the container ship GFS Galaxy, which flies the flag of Cyprus. There were a total of 24 crew members on board, including 11 Indians. On Sunday, the ship was attacked by an unidentified projectile. Later, Iran claimed that the ship tried to pass through a restricted maritime route without permission despite warnings, after which action was taken against it.
Heramb Karmarkar is the second Indian sailor to have lost his life in West Asia in the past three days. Earlier, on Tuesday, an Indian sailor had also died in an attack on two ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. These ongoing attacks have increased India’s concern.

Amid rising tensions, the central government has made several important decisions for the safety of Indian sailors. In an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, it was decided that a special operational dashboard will be created for real-time monitoring of every Indian sailor passing through the Hormuz Strait. In addition, a dedicated liaison officer will be appointed for each family to assist the affected families.
