Amid tensions between India and China, China has activated a Large Phased Array Radar (LPAR) in its Yunnan province near the Myanmar border. The radar has a range of over 5,000 kilometers. It’s claimed to be capable of tracking India’s missile tests and keeping an eye on large parts of the Indian Ocean. Because of this, it’s being considered important for India’s security.
China has been continuously strengthening its surveillance system over the past few years. In this effort, this new LPAR radar installed in Greece is also considered important. This radar can detect ballistic missiles from a long distance, monitor their flight, and gather information on them. Its range is more than 5,000 kilometers. China can keep an eye on the eastern part of India, the Bay of Bengal, and large areas of the Indian Ocean.
This radar can also track missile tests from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. India tests Agni-5, K-4, and other modern missiles from here. If any country gets information about the flight and other technical details of these missiles, it can strengthen its defense preparations accordingly.
Why is it a matter of concern for India?
Defense experts say that the data obtained during missile tests is very important for any country. It can give an idea of the missile’s capabilities and help in preparing new defense systems against it. This is why China’s new radar is being seen as a new strategic challenge for India.

China already has such long-range radars in Xinjiang and Korla. Now, after the new LPAR radar became operational in Yunnan, its monitoring capability has increased even more.
