A fire broke out on Monday afternoon in a three-story building in the Aliganj area of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, killing 15 people. The building turned into a ‘death trap’ because it had only one way in and out. That single exit was cluttered with air-conditioning panels, tangled wires, and other equipment, leaving very little space for trapped people to get out when the fire spread.

According to the latest updates in the case, 18 officers and engineers have been found guilty in the LDA probe of the fire incident. The LDA Vice President has sent a report to the administration recommending action against the guilty officers.

A total of 18 engineers and related officers, including five zonal officers, have been reported among the culprits. Earlier, the LDA had suspended a junior engineer and an assistant engineer.

The building was being misused!

The investigation revealed that the building’s map was approved for residential use. Contrary to the approved map, the building was being used for commercial activities.

The investigation also revealed that in 2016, the demolition order issued against illegal construction was later revoked. According to the report, the then authorized officer Durgesh Srivastava had canceled the demolition order.

There was no proper arrangement to vent out the smoke in the building with the accident. After the fire broke out, smoke filled the entire building and rooms, which caused most people to die from suffocation.

Revealing the carelessness!

• According to the FIR, the building didn’t have enough fire safety arrangements. There was no alternative or emergency exit to get out in case of an unexpected situation.

• There was only one main entrance and exit route to get in and out of the building.

• The electrical wiring and appliances were also installed in an unsafe way.

• The AC’s outdoor unit and other equipment were installed inside the building against safety standards.

• The fire department and NDRF team had to cut through the wall to get inside during the rescue.

• The investigation found that the building operators and responsible people didn’t take safety measures even though they knew about the potential danger.

After this incident in Lucknow, questions have arisen about how a commercial, box-like building was operating in a residential area. Officials from the Lucknow Development Authority are investigating how a building approved for residential purposes started being used for commercial activities.
